Gita Binane was selected for the 2015 PRIDE OF LATVIA award in the category of “Good Works.” This award is now in its second decade. It is awarded to "individuals who serve others over and above anything that can normally be expected of them – self-sacrificing individuals serving society." There are several categories, such as teacher, guardian angel and good works. Over 200 nominations were received. A prestigious panel of judges read each entry and picked one person for each category. Gita was nominated by the young mothers at the Center and the administrative head of one of the Children’s Court offices that has worked with Gita. The Latvian United Methodist Church is extremely proud and happy that the selection committee chose to recognize Gita’s kindness, compassion and dedication!
A film crew spent the day with Gita while she went about her typical daily work routine at the Hope Center. She was interviewed by the national newspaper and her picture was featured on the banner of the front page, along with a full page article.
She was invited for a private audience with the President and First Lady and she and her family were hosted at a luncheon for the awardees.The award ceremony was aired in prime time, on national TV, on the second day of Christmas, an official holiday in Latvia.
This award’s significance is not only recognition of Gita Binane’s self-sacrificing work for the young mothers and babies living at the Hope Center, but also an affirmation of the work and service of the Hope Center to “the least of these” - young women who desperately need help.
The Hope Center’s focus continues to be on doing all in its power to provide these young mothers and babies a safe and loving environment. The Center does all in its power to ensure each new family a possibility for an independent life by teaching life skills, mothering skills and when possible the ability to continue their education.
Gita Binane is 35 years old, having worked at the Hope Center in various capacities for 10 years. She obtained her masters in education and has experience working with government agencies and successfully navigating in the legal system. Among the many selfless acts, Gita has assumed legal guardianship of a 16-year-old mother and her infant daughter to ensure the possibility of her continuing her education.
The Hope Center is able to survive because of your support and prayers and the dedicated work of people such as Gita Binane! Thank you! The Center has helped well over 150 mothers and their babies. At present, the Center is again at maximum capacity, with 8 mothers and 11 babies.
